The Yard Sale – John 11:45

Everyone loves a yard sale

It’s been many years since we hosted our last yard sale. People say everyone loves a yard sale.  I am more likely to visit yard sales than to organize them. It brings to mind the time my daughter and I braved the onslaught of curious onlookers by participating in the community yard sale. I hardly slept thinking about all the questions, the bargaining, the wanting to “make a deal” that would take place as we endeavored to pass along our precious memories, or should I say expensive junk. Everyone knows those worn out shoes can fetch 50 cents.

Center of attention

Did you know that once word got out about Jesus, His miracles and stories, He became the center of attention? He too would get an onslaught of curious onlookers, and even some not so curious, but more confrontational. You get confrontational people at a yard sale also.

Let’s see what the Bible says

Look at the following passage:

John 11:45, “Then many of the people, who had come with Mary and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in him. 11:46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and reported to them what Jesus had done.”

Oh boy

The crowds followed the signs. They saw, they heard, but still, some walked away with nothing. Some walked away in disbelief that Jesus would speak such things to them. Some walked away mumbling under their breath the price was too high. How could Jesus expect them to pay that much?

The offering

Do you know what the difference is between what Jesus is offering to everyone and what I am offering at my insignificant yard sale?

What Jesus offers is free for everyone.

I’m trying to make money at my yard sale.

And what Jesus offers people is still free today.

Something else for you to consider

We must accept the gift Jesus offers. After all, it is free. We must be willing to accept His gift, confess our sins and believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Without admitting, believing and confessing Jesus died for you, you might as well consider the 50 cent bargain from a yard sale more worthy.

If you have not accepted the gift, Jesus offers, please consider doing that today. If you have, I am thankful you are part of the family.

Let’s pray

Lord, thank you for sending your son to die on the cross for our sins. It’s a gift you offer all of us. It was free to the people then, and its free to us now. Everyone loves free things, even at a yard sale Lord, but not everyone is willing to accept your gift. Bless us today and thank you for your gift. In His name, I pray, Amen.
